Working with refugees from South Sudan, the DRC, Sudan, Somalia, and Burundi

1 Mission engaging 500+ refugees
With its open-door policy to refugees, Uganda hosts the highest number of refugees and asylum-seekers in Africa, with over 1.7 million displaced people. The Palorinya Refugee Settlement, located in Moyo district in the West Nile region, is home to approximately 125,000 of these displaced persons, largely from South Sudan and the DRC, as well as Sudan, Somalia, and Burundi.
The Campfire Project partnered with local IsraAid staff, working with children and youth at three different camps within the settlement. Working with preschool age children up through young adults, the programming included stilts, dance, music, visual arts, and writing, led by Campfire’s team of volunteers in collaboration with local artists and musicians. The project culminated in a showcase for the broader community.
In addition to providing training on site in psycho-social support with school teachers and staff of the Child-Friendly Spaces, The Campfire Project laid the foundation for continued programming.
Since our departure in 2023, Campfire continues to support weekly educational music and art therapy workshops for youth in the settlement, led by a local musician - Patrick Anguyo - trained during the 2023 mission.
